A 23-year-old amateur mathematician solved a 60-year-old unsolved math problem with help from ChatGPT.
It was a combinatorics problem posed by Erdos in the 1960s. He worked with ChatGPT 5.4 Pro and completed the proof in just 1 hour and 20 minutes.
What's remarkable is the approach. Instead of the standard methods that mathematicians had been repeating for decades, ChatGPT suggested a completely different path that nobody had tried before, and it turned out to be correct. Fields Medal winner Terence Tao reviewed the proof and confirmed it was valid.
What makes this significant is that AI has gone beyond being a calculator to becoming a research partner. Experts spent 60 years trying the same approaches, while AI found a different path without any preconceptions. This isn't just about math. OpenAI and Microsoft have significantly revised their partnership terms.
Three key changes. First, OpenAI is no longer exclusive to Azure and can serve from other clouds. Second, the revenue share that Microsoft received from OpenAI is being phased out. Third, Microsoft's license to OpenAI's technology shifts from exclusive to non-exclusive. In return, Microsoft remains a major shareholder in OpenAI.
3️⃣ Google Splits Its AI Chip in Two for the First Time
Google announced the new TPU v8 AI chip at Cloud Next 2026.
After 10 years of using one chip for everything, they've split it into a 'training chip' (TPU 8t) and a 'serving chip' (TPU 8i). The training chip is 2.8x faster; the serving chip is 8x faster. Training AI and running AI are fundamentally different tasks. This could make AI services faster and cheaper.
