What Are Interview Composition Prompts?

Interview composition prompts help design a scene in which one person speaks while the camera communicates trust, attention, and context. A close-up, medium close-up, over-the-shoulder frame, two-shot, and environmental interview each creates a different relationship with the viewer. Specify subject placement, eyeline, headroom, background depth, lens, and key light instead of describing only a person sitting in front of a camera.

Common Interview Frames

  • A medium close-up placed on a rule-of-thirds point
  • An over-the-shoulder view with the interviewer in soft foreground focus
  • A two-shot that explains the relationship between both people
  • A tight close-up that emphasizes expression
  • An environmental frame that connects the speaker to their work or place

Eyeline and Negative Space

Place the speaker slightly left or right of center and leave nose room in the direction of the gaze. Direct eye contact suits a formal announcement, while looking toward an off-camera interviewer creates a natural documentary feeling. Headroom should support the subject without making the frame feel cramped or distant. Mentioning the body crop and background balance makes the composition more repeatable.

Lighting and Background

A soft key light, restrained fill, and a practical light in the background can give the face dimension while keeping the setting warm. Choose a bookshelf, studio, kitchen, or workshop that hints at the subject’s identity, but avoid clutter that competes with the eyes. Shallow depth of field isolates the speaker; deeper focus gives the location more informational value.

Production Checklist

Include the speaker’s role, camera height, lens, eyeline, light direction, and background in the prompt. Make sure the mouth and hands remain readable if the frame will guide a talking sequence. Leave a simple area for subtitles, captions, or a name strap.
